Ventspils University College announces an international competition for doctoral scholarship

Ventspils University College (hereinafter – VUC; http://old.venta.lv/en/) announces an international competition for a four year 1420 €/month doctoral scholarship award in astrochemistry resulting in a completed doctoral thesis.

The research efforts are to take place in the VUC Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center (VIRAC; http://virac.eu/en/home/), while the PhD studies – in the University of Latvia or one of world’s leading universities. The research will include (theoretical) astrochemistry with VIRAC’s leading researcher Dr. phys. Juris Kalvāns as thesis supervisor in VUC. Besides, the student will have the opportunity to use freely VUC VIRAC’s 32 m and 16 m radio telescopes.

The competition is open to any applicant that fulfils the following requirements:

  • The applicant’s qualifications shall comply with the requirements of the doctoral studies.
  • A planned or approved PhD thesis topic shall correspond to the particular research area of radio astronomy or astrophysics chosen by VIRAC for year 2017, namely, astrochemistry.
  • The applicant conforms to at least one of the following criteria:
    • has a master’s degree from a university which, according to the latest Thomson Reuters rank, is among the world’s top 400 universities or is among the world’s top 200 universities in the fields of physics or astronomy;
    • submits a letter of recommendation from an internationally recognized astrophysics or astronomy scientist holding a position of Professor or a senior researcher in one of the 400 best universities represented in the Thomson Reuters rank. Astronomy must be amongst the university’s research areas;
    • during the last five years the applicant has at least three astrophysics-related scientific publications included in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science data base, published in journals with impact factor greater than 1.

The applicant shall submit the following documents in Latvian or English:

  • copy of a valid passport or an ID;
  • a document confirming a qualification which, in accordance with the Regulations, allows access to doctoral studies (the originals are to be presented if the copies are not notarized);
  • Curriculum Vitae in the Europass CV template (https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/documents/curriculum-vitae);
  • a letter of motivation;
  • an annotation describing the student’s envisaged research endorsed by the potential supervisor. The student may contact the VUC supervisor J. Kalvāns about the annotation before submitting the official application. In this case, his eligibility for the scholarship must be demonstrated;
  • a list of publications (if any);
  • letters of recommendation (if any).

Documents or their copies in Latvian or English shall be submitted (a passport or an ID is to be presented) on workdays 10:00 – 16:00 at Ventspils University College, Inzenieru 101, Ventspils, LV-3601, Latvia before July 30, 2017. Scanned copies may also be e-mailed to venta@venta.lv with the originals or notarized copies supplied if the scholarship is awarded. The VUC is not responsible for any technical problems or malfunction of e-mail services. The results will be announced before August 15.

VUC has the rights to require additional information from the applicants in the form of documents and/or conversation (maybe as teleconferencing) if it is necessary for making decision in this competition. The successful applicant has to be employed by VUC for three years after the completion of the thesis.

Radio astronomers score high marks in the competition for EU funding

10 million Euro for European consortium which also includes scientists from Ventspils.

RadioNet, a consortium of 28 leading institutions for radio astronomical research from 13 countries, which also includes Latvia, has been awarded 10 million Euro by the European Commission, to be used over the next four years. The speaker of the RadioNet consortium is Prof. J. Anton Zensus from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn (Germany). Announcement of the preliminary competition of postdoctoral applications of VUC

Ventspils University College announces the opening of the competition for Preliminary Selection of Postdoctoral Applications for submission to the State Education Development Agency for the research application selection round for Activity 1.1.1.2 “Post-doctoral Research Aid” of the Specific Aid Objective 1.1.1 “To increase the research and innovative capacity of scientific institutions of Latvia and the ability to attract external financing, investing in human resources and infrastructure” of the Operational Programme “Growth and Employment”.

Duration of the competition from 05.10.2016. until 07.11.2016.

Documents are to be submitted in compliance with the Regulation.

Results of the preliminary selection of post-doctoral applications will be published on the website of the VUC and announced to the post-doctoral researcher.

Competition for doctoral scholarship award in radio astronomy or astrophysics

The Ventspils University College (hereinafter – VUC; http://www.old.venta.lv ) announces an international competition for a four year 1420 €/month doctoral scholarship award in radio astronomy or astrophysics resulting in a doctoral thesis in one of the three main research areas of the VUC Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center (VUC VIRAC; http://www.virac.eu ): solar physics, astrochemistry, or investigations of natural or man-made near-Earth objects.

The research efforts are to take place in the VUC VIRAC, while the PhD studies – in one of the Latvian or world's leading universities. The student has the opportunity to use the recently upgraded world class VUC VIRAC radio telescopes with 32 and 16 m diameters.

The competition is open to any applicant that fulfils the following requirements:

  • The applicant’s qualifications shall comply with the requirements of the doctoral studies,
  • A planned or approved PhD thesis topic shall correspond to a research area of radio astronomy or astrophysics,
  • The applicant conforms to at least one of the following criteria:

Since July is high season in Ventspils due to its location on the coast of the Baltic sea, we strongly recommend to book your place in the hotel as soon as possible. Bus connection will be provided by the orgabnziers of the conference both from the Riga International Airport to Ventspils, and from the hotel to conference venue.

How to get to Ventspils

To get to Ventspils you should first travel to Riga, the capital city of Latvia, Riga International Airport.
Riga International Airport is located 13 kilometres from the city centre. Taxi should cost approximately 10 LVL (15 EUR), we recommend to take green Airbaltic taxi.

There are also regular bus connections from the airport to the city centre: please take bus No 22 http://www.riga-airport.com/en.

Ventspils www.visitventspils.com/en/ located 180 km from Riga. The most convenient way to get to Ventspils is by bus from Riga Bus Station. Please see the bus schedule on http://www.autoosta.lv/main.php?lng=eng and allow approximately 2.5-3 hours for the trip. Transportation from Riga to Ventspils is also possible by car http://www.carrent.lv/en/

Centre for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Regional Development at Ventspils University College organizes PhD work in progress roundtable discussion. This discussion is targeted to the doctoral students of inter-university doctoral study programme “Business Administration” as implemented by Riga International School of Economics and Business Administration, BA School of Business and Finance and Ventspils University College, as well as doctoral students from other universities. This is excellent opportunity for PhD students to present their work in progress to senior researchers, such as Prof. David Smallbone, Dr. Markku Virtanen and Dr. Arnis Sauka and receive valuable feedback to further develop their doctoral thesis.
